Inspired by the Historia Calamitatum. Some passages really make you scratch you head; Abelard had an apparent penchant for beating Heloise at the beginning of their “relationship”. Perhaps the worst passages involve Abelard writing that he would rape Heloise if she hadn’t willingly submitted to his wiles.
Without any thought that this might be slightly odd, he also wrote that he would often force her into having sex even when she did not want to, to the point of beating her if she refused.
That’s medieval romance, for you.
